Papuan Freshwater Sole (Brachirus selheimi)

Papuan Freshwater Sole (Brachirus selheimi) is a unique and interesting species of fish.

Habitat: This species is native to the coastal waters of New Guinea and Northeastern Australia. It inhabits shallow streams and swamps with fine sand substrates1.
Appearance: The Papuan Freshwater Sole has a flat, oval-shaped body that allows it to blend into sandy environments. It can grow up to 5 inches in length1.
Diet: In the wild, it feeds on insects, small fish, and crustaceans. In an aquarium setting, they may require live prey initially but can be weaned onto frozen foods like bloodworms or mysis shrimp.
Behavior: These fish spend most of their time burrowed in the sand, waiting to ambush prey. They are generally not aggressive towards tankmates that are too large to be considered a meal.
Care Requirements: They need a tank with a fine sand substrate and peaceful tankmates. The water should be clean and well-oxygenated, with a temperature range of 76-82°F and a pH of 6.8-7.81.
