  • Lifespan: Up to about 5 years with good care

Ideal Aquarium Conditions

  • Tank size: 15–20 gallons minimum; larger for bigger schools 
  • Temperature: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
  • pH: 5.5–7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral) 
  • Water hardness: Soft to moderately soft water preferred 
  • Group size: Keep at least 6–8, though 10+ shows the best schooling behavior and coloration. 

Aquascaping

These fish look best in:

  • Heavily planted aquariums
  • Dark substrates
  • Driftwood and botanicals
  • Tannin-stained "blackwater" setups
  • Open swimming space in the center of the tank
